Our History
Ivan L. McCoy graduated from NADC in April 1965 and began his Career as a diesel mechanic at Charleston Truck and Trailer in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1974 he purchased a pickup, loaded His tools and started his own road service business. In 1976 he moved the business to a one bay garage in Huntington, West Virginia. He worked from this location until February of 1980, when he moved into a new 6,000 square foot facility. Within two years, Ivan had hired two men to work parts, four mechanics and his brother Leonard became the accounting department. In 1983 Ivan Became a Marmon Truck dealer which gave him access to needed parts and recognition for his service department. The first year two tractors; a 1983 Marmon and a 1979 Peterbilt were sold. By the winter of 1983, the Freightliner and Mercedes-Benz line of trucks were added. By the spring of 1989 a new addition was completed. McCoy Freightliner, Inc. had grown from a “one man” operation to eleven employees in the parts department, twelve mechanics, a sales staff of six and an office support staff of six. The original building is now over 25,000 square feet with an additional 6,500 square foot body shop. McCoy Freightliner has one of the largest parts departments, service and sales facilities in the tri-state area. Although Ivan worked primarily in the administration and sales departments, it was not unusual to find him with his sleeves rolled up and working on a truck, in the parts department selling parts or on his tractor moving snow off the lot after a snow storm. Ivan L. McCoy was inducted into the Nashville Auto-Diesel College Graduate Hall of Fame in the Class of 1994.
